How E-Petitions Work
Under the Standing Orders of the House of Commons (SO 36), any Canadian citizen or resident can create an e-petition on the House of Commons website. The petition must be sponsored by a sitting Member of Parliament. If the petition collects 500+ signatures in 120 days, the government is required to table an official response within 45 calendar days. The response is published on the House of Commons website and entered into Hansard.
