Fear of the Medical System

Systemic Fear Among the Vulnerable

There is a growing documentation of vulnerable Canadians - including those with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and mental health challenges - actively avoiding hospitals and health care facilities. The primary reason cited is the aggressive promotion and availability of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) within these institutions. Instead of receiving care and support, patients fear they will be offered death as a solution to their complex medical or socio-economic needs.

Erosion of Medical Trust

The core foundation of the healthcare system is the trust between the patient and the provider. When a state apparatus institutionalizes medical death, particularly as a cost-saving measure or a solution to inadequate social support, that trust is catastrophically eroded. Patients report feeling unsafe discussing depression or despair, fearing these normal human reactions will be weaponized to initiate a MAID pathway rather than triggering comprehensive care.

The Socio-Economic Coercion

This avoidance creates a secondary crisis: delayed or denied treatment. When fear of the system drives vulnerable populations away, minor, manageable conditions escalate into fatal ones. It is a passive form of demographic reduction driven by an institution that has substituted state-sanctioned death for genuine social support, adequate housing, and comprehensive medical care.

The Institutional Degradation Pattern

Expand MAID to mental illness and chronic conditions. Remove wait periods and safeguards. Defund comprehensive palliative and social care. Offer MAID proactively to disabled and vulnerable populations. Each documented independently — together they describe an institution substituting state-sanctioned death for public health.
